Screw reviewing new releases, everyone does that. I'm here to tell you the things that have made into my regular rotation due to greatness. Beginning with Neutral Milk Hotel's 1998 release "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea."
I'm not going to get to complicated on ratings, everything will either suck, or not suck. And this, my friends, most certainly does not suck. Yes, it was released in 1998, so? Frontman Jeff Magnum whails verses that seem to come straight from a room with padded walls, and is accompanied by music that could not be more appropriate. The album does not stop. From track one to the last note played there is not a moment of silence, and ends abrubtly when you hear the guitar sat down. From the bagpipes to the saw, from the trumpets to the erratic acoustic guitar, everything seems to fit into place perfectly. The vocals stand over the orchestration of all of these instruments like they rule the world. He's speaking in carefully arranged metaphors, or complete nonsense, sometimes it's hard to tell. But it's always easy to recognize the conviction in this mans voice. Whatever the hell he's singing about, he means it.
Give it a chance, get it. And whenever your ears have forty minutes to spare, start this album. You won't be disappointed., well you might be, and if you are, you have bad taste. (i kid, i kid.. sorta)
